This exceptional group of eight individuals has had in-depth training over the course of a year on the principles and proven practices that reliably and successfully grow women’s support. The Women’s Philanthropy Alliance will collectively help scale inclusive women’s philanthropy across our sector. Valerie J. Cushman, Ph.D.

Valerie Cushman, Ph.D. in higher education, Sr. Director of Alumni Engagement & Inclusion Initiatives at W&M and proud member of the Women’s Philanthropy Alliance, has proven success growing women’s philanthropy.

With over 30 years of experience in public and private institutions, having served on the cabinet of two universities, she brings a depth of knowledge and experience in fundraising practices that convert high-capacity women into impactful donors. At W&M, she founded the creation and leads the sustained efforts of the Society of 1918, a collective of women philanthropists who contributed 55% of the donated funds to the $1 billion For the Bold campaign and raised a $5.2 million endowment that will forever support the growth of women’s engagement, leadership and philanthropy at W&M. Cat Slack is Managing Director at Aperio Philanthropy and proud member of the Women’s Philanthropy Alliance, where she brings 15 years of experience in fundraising, donor development, client storytelling, and public speaking. She has worked with clients such as Atlanta Community Food Bank, California State University in Sacramento, Fountain House, LifeMoves, Northern Illinois Food Bank, and United Way of Rhode Island. Before joining Aperio, Cat served as Chief Philanthropy Officer for Second Harvest of Silicon Valley, where she increased revenue by 203% and led the launch of a $150 million capital campaign. Cat also worked on behalf of those experiencing homelessness, serving as Chief Development Officer at Social Advocates for Youth and managing development at Committee on the Shelterless in Sonoma County, CA. Cat holds an MBA from Dominican University and a BS from Baldwin-Wallace University and served in the United States Peace Corps.
